Review 4

This 3-yr.-old gelding was brought to me with the complaint of “Bad Breath”.  Smelling the horse’s breath confirmed a problem existed, but the smell was not consistent with an infected tooth.  It smelled more like rotting vegetation.

Oral examination revealed that the youngster had not shed most of the #6 or any of the #7 premolar deciduous caps (baby teeth).  These caps are typically shed at age 2 1/2 and age 3, respectively.  Feed had been packing under the loose #6 retained caps and was the source of the rotting hay smell.

7 retained caps were extracted in total.  ETR was corrected, bitseats rolled in, and the mouth was equilibrated (balanced).

A one-week follow-up phone call confirmed that the bad breath had been cured.   :-)
